The Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF) has approved Gran Canaria as one of the 11 Spanish locations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Gran Canaria has met all of FIFA’s qualifications for a host location.
The announcement represents a historic moment because it is the first time the island will host multiple tournament matches. This is excellent news to the islands economy as well as the airport.
This news is expected to result in increased travel to the island and LPA Gran Canaria Airport.
Gran Canaria’s Estadio de Gran Canaria will undergo extensive modifications to fulfil World Cup requirements, including an increase in capacity to over 40,000 spectators.
Spain’s decision to choose 11 venues is part of a cooperative hosting agreement. There are six Moroccan cities nominated (Marrakech, Rabat, Casablanca, Agadir, Fez, and Tangier), as well as three Portuguese cities (Sporting Lisbon, Benfica, and Porto).
