Strike by Groundforce at Gran Canaria Airport

Wednesday, September 8th, 2021

The first day of strike action by Groundforce personnel caused delays at LPA Gran Canaria airport.

Unbelievably, more than 18 flights were disrupted and were forced to fly without taking their passenger’s bags and luggage with them. Groundforce is responsible for baggage handling at LPA. The intermittent strike was called by the unions to demand an improvement in working conditions at the airport. According to Aena, the minimum services were provided on the first day of the protest.

Groundforce union leader stated that if the firm and the union cannot reach a satisfactory agreement then the strike would continue each Wednesday and Saturday for as long as it takes.

With strike action anticipated in the weeks ahead, delays at the airport are to be expected.

For those passengers that had to leave without their luggage, pickup at LPA was made available the following day and those flying home had their luggage transported on alternative planes.

It is anticipated that a deal can be reached as soon as possible to avoid any detrimental impact on tourism. The flying advice, for now, is to fly to Gran Canaria but avoid Wednesday and Saturdays if convenient.
